The oppositions of the past and the present
To keep the government machinery well-oiled means having the opposition parties to watch their every move and to make sure that they are always on track. The previous opposition mechanic in the first picture, who with his band of soldiers relentlessly splattered oil on the previous government machinery to check its corrupt ways. If one scratches the walls of our parliament, he would definitely without fail hear this man’s voice. After decades of abuse, the machinery finally brakes down and falls apart to provide the nation an opportunity to test a new machine and new machines come with new mechanics. Lim kit Siang has now begun hands on, defusing the ‘Time bombs in Malaysia’ after clinching the mandate of the Rakyat to be promoted from an opposition mechanic to a law maker in the Government.
The picture next to the detonator is that of a young man who has begun surfing on the crest of a wave that he has created ever since the National Front was pushed to the back seat in the GE 14. This ex-Minister has now begun to show great promise in taking over Lim Kit Siang’s old job as the grease monkey of the brand-new elected machinery.
When the previous Government lost its hegemony, Malaysia saw history in the making when stones and brickbats were hurled at each other in the losing camp. While there was no serious chaos such as looting, violence or public disorder the events that followed was clear evidence of the faith and loyalty that weakly cemented the alliance parties which finally crumbled like a house of cards.
Right from the revelation of the colossal defeat of his party, Khairy Jamaluddin began to show no fear of retribution from his peers and started exhibiting a new brand of politics quite perverse to the unwritten ones in UMNO. He was quite vocal about the party’s downfall blaming himself as well as not sparing the people who actually contributed to the disaster.
Turning down three supreme positions offered to him by a person who became president by beating him in a seriously dubious party election is the exemplary show of his courage. For him to remain free and not tied down by party positions which he says could influence his pursuit in trying to make UMNO great again seems to be an ambition which garners the respect and admiration of the Rakyat.
These are the salient features of a good grease monkey and a good leader and maybe even a trail leading to occupy the next Prime Minister’s office.
WHEN ONE HAS NO FEAR IN STANDING UP AGAINST INJUSTICE, HE WILL THEN BE FEARED BY THOSE WHO THRIVE IN PUTTING FEAR INTO OTHERS.
